What Kind of GPS Tracker Do I Need?

What Kind of GPS Tracker Do I Need?
The two major types of GPS tracker are active trackers and passive trackers. Below you will find a description and common uses of each to help you choose which one you need.

  • Active GPS
Active GPS trackers are the only choice if you need to know RIGHT NOW where the tracker is. All active trackers have a monthly subscription fee which allows you to simply log on to a web site with an easy to use interface and see where your tracker is. They are dependent upon cell phone network coverage to report their position. We have service coverage area maps for our plans so please make sure your area is covered.

         Common uses:

    • Fleet cars - Car rentals, taxi's, transportation service vehicles
    • Single cars/trucks or property
    • Parents keeping track of their teens
    • When you don't have access to the car's battery
    • Tracking company vehicles to make sure they're not being used inappropriately
    • Recovering stolen vehicles and assets

  • Passive GPS
Passive GPS trackers record a position as frequently as every one second and store that information inside the memory in the tracker. When you want to view the information, simply remove the GPS tracker from the vehicle, plug it into your computer and the software places all the information on a map. Passive GPS trackers do not require any monthly fees and are not dependent on cell phone network coverage.

         Common uses:

    • Verifying accuracy of mileage reports
    • Keeping track of mileage for tax purposes
    • Making sure company vehicles are not being used improperly
    • Keeping tabs on teenage or elderly drivers
